Overview

Have you got your heart set on a highly-rewarding career as a vet assistant in Australia? If so, you’ll need to know how to get there! Here we lay out what’s needed and how Wandr empowers school leavers to find their ideal career with online courses for teens and advice.

Did you know how many pets there are in Australia? At last count, there were some 28.7 million in homes up and down the country. It's why your average careers expo usually has some kind of animal care stand or representative - as they’re crying out for people! That's what we look at here as we delve into what the job entails, along with the many benefits.

How long does it take to become a vet assistant?

Generally speaking, it takes around 10-15 weeks to study to become a vet assistant in Australia, which pales in comparison to the 5 years or so of study it takes to become a vet. That means that from having no training whatsoever in animal care, you can be qualified enough to start applying for jobs in around 2½ months - that’s only a few weeks longer than your Summer school holidays

What tasks does a vet assistant do?

As you’ll find out by taking Wandr online courses for teens on the subject, the role of a vet assistant is an extremely varied one, involving a number of responsibilities which include the following:

  • Greeting pet owners and dealing with needs
  • Administering animal first aid when required
  • Taking urine/blood samples
  • Bathing/feeding of animals

One thing is for certain, you’ll need stamina, as your days will be full and packed with action. As such, you’ll need to be nice and fit and have no problem standing pretty much all day every day. Most people in the job love this aspect, however, as it means every day is interesting!
