“What are the challenges of working in the creative industries?”

“In the creative sector, there can be many forms of rejection. For most, rejection is a negative experience as they're not receiving the desired outcome at that moment. It could be a creative pitch that is knocked back, or a brief that needs changing as it no longer works for the clients.

On the other hand, if you’re a performer, they may be looking for a different take on the performance. There are so many varying factors for why you or the idea is rejected at that moment. You have to remain confident that your creative flair will pull you through”.

“Did you ever doubt your own creative abilities?”

“Yes! Early on in my career, I had a lot of doubt that I wasn't good enough or I wasn't enough in general.There were many moments along my 25-year journey which told me to stop, slow down and ask the question, Who am I?

For many years my identity was tied to a need to be the best, or 'it's not enough'. I would reach a goal and not even acknowledge the hard work I'd done but be on to the next because I had to be more or do more.

My advice is to celebrate the small steps, the little things each day, ticking the boxes, and really enjoying all of the stepping stones. It's a much more satisfying way of working. I had to learn to change my perspective.”
